Sometimes the odds are against a wedding that goes off without a hitch. Such was the case with Gina and Amie’s Virginia Beach oceanfront wedding.

The couple met the fall of 2014 in Aversa, Italy, and their relationship progressed quickly. Before they knew it, they were back in the States planning their autumn beach wedding.

“We envisioned a gorgeous ceremony on the beach with a grand reception to follow,” said Gina. “Little did we know that things would take a couple of unexpected turns.”

“It turned out that the hardest part of our wedding planning was having some of our family reject our invitation,” said Amie. “We received negative comments from those who do not support gay marriage or relationships in general. The rejection opened our eyes, and it was hard.”

The couple plowed ahead with their plans regardless, only to face yet another challenge in the form of Hurricane Florence.

“A week before our day, the hurricane was heading in our direction, and the hotel informed us that we would have to cancel,” said Gina. “It was heartbreaking for us, and we had to inform friends from all over the world of the news.”

Later that week, their luck and Hurricane Florence took a turn for the better, and the wedding was back on. Although the beach ceremony had to be moved indoors, and many of their guests had already canceled their travel plans, Gina’s father arrived just in time to walk her down the aisle as planned.

“Our wedding day turned out to be the most beautiful, magical chaotic day of my life,” said Gina. “I had to remember that nothing worth having comes without some difficulty. It was worth every minute of it to have been able to marry my best friend and soul mate, and raise our daughter together.”
